Beach trip, day 3

Rain is coming down sideways and I can see gusts of it flying across the dunes. It beats against the windows of the living room. The ocean is still visible in the distance, the surf strong and the waves crashing with more gusto than usual.

Inside, it is warm and cozy. I sip my coffee while sitting quietly with friends and appreciating the view. From the kitchen I hear the sounds of dogs, children, and the muffled chatter of several adults as food prep and cleanup are accomplished.

The bacon is likely cooked by now. I’ll finish writing this and then I’ll go obtain some.

We’re serious about our bacon in this house.

Yesterday, we started season 3 of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. It will be cold and rainy all day today. We’ll stay cozied up inside with Mrs Maisel and each other.

Someone made dough for bread bowls yesterday and it now sits rising in the fridge, waiting for the clam chowder that will be prepared later to fill it. There is also a brisket slow roasting in the oven, a kale and chorizo dish in a slow cooker, and a pork and sauerkraut dish in another slow cooker.

It will be a slow, relaxed, cozy, cuddly, rainy New Year’s Eve celebration with good friends, good food, and good wine and spirits. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I love it here. I love our annual retreat and the opportunity to recharge it provides us as our close to the holiday season and entry to the new year. I am so privileged to know these wonderful people, to have a friend who can host us at a home as grand as this, to experience all of this joy.

I am happy. And I hope all of you are, as well.

Happy new year.
