Day 75: Keep calm and carry on

Yesterday I realized that hiring probably isn’t any company’s priority right now, and I might have a long slog ahead until I find a new job.

My achievement for yesterday was not letting this send me into a panic. Instead, I decided to make good use of whatever extra time I have.

I decided I’m going to work towards a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. It’s a lot of work, but I’m willing to forego some of my very important Twitter time in order to achieve this lofty goal.

I mean, I might as well, right?

Of course, I am starting to feel a little more anxiety about whether I’ll find something before my savings runs out.

(Sidebar: my phone autocorrected “savings” to “sanity” and I did not find it amusing.)

The best thing to do with my anxiety, I find, is to channel it into something productive. What is at the heart of my fears, and is there anything that can be done about it?

Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

My fear is that companies are not going to be as active in their hiring efforts until the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic is behind us. The already incredibly slow hiring process is likely to be even slower right now. As people fumble through working from home, managing kids and disrupted routines, and continue needing to manage their usual workload, looking at resumes and setting up online interviews will not be a priority.

Is there anything I can do about that reality? Not really.

What can I do, though? I’ll have lots of time on my hands, so I’ll make myself an even better candidate for these jobs. That way, once normal life resumes and people start hiring again, I’ll be better positioned to get noticed.

I’m proud of this strategy. Inside, yes, I’m kind of freaking out and having meltdowns, but I’m doing everything I can to not let them take over.

What is in my control, I will do my best to manage. What is not, I will do my best to accept and roll with.

It’s really all any of us can do right now.
