Yesterday, I achieved the impossible. I achieved balance.
I woke up early, as I usually tend to. I worked out. I did laundry. I vacuumed. I cleaned the bathrooms. I cleaned the kitchen. I made this One Pan Chicken Drumsticks with Rice and Beans recipe from epicurious (highly recommend trying it; it is delicious).
I also spent an hour on the phone with an old friend and another hour chatting with my mother later in the day. I sat and read for hours, too. I’m re-reading the Anne of Green Gables series. It’s exactly the slow, sweet, calming, beautiful influence my life needs right now.
In the evening, I watched a couple of episodes of Call the Midwives on Netflix. Again… Slow. Sweet. Calming. Beautiful.
I glanced at the news once, briefly. I quickly turned away.
Slow. Sweet. Calm. Beautiful. These are the things I need in my head, heart and spirit right now. I know what’s going on outside isn’t good. I need to keep what’s going on inside as pleasant as possible.
Yesterday, I achieved that. I was productive and I feel good about that. But I also relaxed and allowed beauty into my soul.
Balance. Not frenzy. Getting things done is a form of self-care. So is Anne of Green Gables. AoGG has been a favorite form of self-care for me for decades. It never fails to calm my rumpled spirits.
Yesterday, I achieved balance. Today, I hope to do the same.
We will get through this. One day at a time, using every form of self-care available to us, we will get through this.
